Halloween Originated in Ireland

It is believed Ireland is where Halloween originated. It evolved from the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain, a ritualistic festival that honoured the pagan gods of the harvest.

Halloween Costumes Kept the Spirits Away

Nowadays, we wear Halloween costumes for fun to celebrate the tradition, but, years ago this was not the case. Originating from the Celtic pagan celebration; Samhain, superstitious people during this time believed the recently deceased would come back as spirits during All Hallows Eve.

Worried that evil spirits could be amongst these, the locals would dress up in scary costumes to keep any malevolent ghosts away.

The Witch is the Most Popular Costume

There are a variety of hugely popular Halloween costumes; vampires, werewolves, zombies and mummies are just a few of these. But, the number one spot belongs to witches! They reign supreme when it comes to Halloween. Millions around the world like to dress up as the spooky character.

Samhainophobia

We’ve heard of well know phobias such as the fear of spiders, heights, crowded spaces, etc. But did you know there is a fear of Halloween itself? This is called Samhainophobia.

Jack O’ Lanterns

Today, pumpkins are widely used to carve and create scary Jack O’ Lanterns, but this has not always been the case. Years ago, simple lanterns were carved out of turnips! Adorned with frightful faces, these lanterns were thought to scare away evil spirits that may be roaming on All Hallows Eve.

Michael Myers’ Mask is a William Shatner Mask

The 1978 classic horror film Halloween is easily recognisable around the world. The mask of Mike Myers is a focal element of the film. But, the budget for filming was so tight, crew members used the cheapest mask they could find.

The mask turned out to be a Star Trek William Shatner mask. Sprayed white and the eye holes reshaped, a horror villain legend was born.
