Halloween isn’t just about dressing up and trick or treating; it’s also about superstitions and spooky tales. Throughout the years, we have heard many myths about Halloween traditions, but are they true, or are they just stories created to scare us?

Take a look at some spooky myths we discovered to get you in the Halloween mood.

Black Cats

It’s true, many associate black cats with Halloween, but why? Used as symbols of bad luck, black cat superstitions date back to the Dark Ages. Years ago, elderly, solitary women were often accused of witchcraft, and their pet cats were said to be their demonic animals that had been given to them by the devil.

Nowadays, in the UK, it is considered good luck for a black cat to cross your path.

The Colours of Halloween

Where did the colours of Halloween come from? It is said the traditional Halloween colours; orange and black, stem from the pagan celebration of autumn and the harvest. Orange symbolises the colours of the crops and turning leaves, while black marks the end of summer and the changing season. Over time, green, purple and yellow have also been introduced into the colour scheme of Halloween decorations.

Spiders

Spiders are widely used for Halloween décor. Years ago, it was said spiders were the evil companions of witches during medieval times. It is said, if you see a spider near a candle-lit lamp, witches are nearby.

Apple Bobbing

In ancient times, the apple was viewed as a sacred fruit that could be used to predict the future. Bobbing for apples is one of the traditional games used for fortune-telling on Halloween night. It was said, if you were the first to retrieve an apple without using your hands, you would be the first to marry.

Trick or Treat Costumes

A Celtic myth, dressing up as a ghoul would deceive the evil spirits into thinking that you were one of them so that they would not try to take your soul. In America, trick-or-treating became a customary Halloween tradition around the late 1950s, after it was brought over by Irish immigrants in the early 1900s.
